The sun hadn’t risen yet, but a spitting rain had started and that slowed me down. I had sobbed for most of my wild sprint and now that the sky had noticeably lightened, I needed to find a hotel. If MDA came and arrested me at this point, I wouldn’t care.

The magnitude of memories kept hitting me, and I couldn’t deal with them. Not with Robby dead and my heart shattered from more than one man.

I took the next exit ramp and found a small-town motel. When I walked into the lobby, the desk clerk straightened. I crossed. “I need the room on the far corner.”

He nodded and went to the computer.

“Do you have a credit card?” He smiled at me, as if seeing a strange woman dripping water on his lobby floor was normal.

I almost got snarky and asked whether I looked like I had a credit card. But instead, I tapped into my new vampiric power. “Give me the key, and then you will forget you ever saw me. The only thing you know is that room is out of order, so there is no need for housekeeping or renting it to anyone else. Understand?”

His face went slack. “Yes, ma’am.” He pulled the room key from the pegs with a nod. It was as if he were looking right through me when he handed it to me.

I left the office and went to the room, locking the door behind me before I closed the curtains and fell face-first on the bed.

Now that I wasn’t moving, the memories swarmed, weighing down on me.

Conversations. Laughter. Sex. All of it overwhelmed me.

Cassius was more than just a fling, too. That burned more than the sun, because Robby’s fears were warranted. I was truly in love with Cassius. But I hadn’t broached the subject with anyone at work. I hadn’t even told Robby about him. I kept him close to the vest and avoided all the normal spots that the crew at MDA frequented. I did not want that bubble to bust wide open and leave me devastated.

Oh. But it still had. And that event coincided with the same timeframe Robby mentioned. That was when I found out exactly what Cassius was.

The memory overloaded me. I scrunched my eyes closed against it, but it still seeped through.

I had gotten off early and wanted to surprise Cassius. I rarely had this type of time free, and I didn’t want to wait until dinner, so I stopped by his house. I went to knock, but I really wanted to surprise him, so I tried the front door. If it had been locked, then I would have wished for a key. But the door swung open.

I would have to talk to him about his lack of security. He shouldn’t be leaving his door open like that in the city. There were too many nefarious characters around to be so lax.

Once I was inside, the fact that all the drapes were drawn struck me as odd. I crossed the entry and stepped into the hallway that led to his bedroom.
